“Be who you needed when you were younger”
Hi All! I started this year with a quick “community” art project based on the street artist ThankyouX. His most recognizable work is made up pf a series of cubes and he says that each cube tells an individual story.

I thought this would be a great first week “back to school” project in that each student can make their own cube and then I can put it all together to tell the story of our school community! I plan on inviting all staff and admin to complete a cube as well so that it will be a truly representative of our entire school community.
I showed the students this great video that tells a bit about the artist. I loved how he talked about all the great opportunities that came his way without planning. I highlighted for the kids that in pursuing his passion and doing something that he really loved, opportunities came to him.
He also talks about social media in the video and I used that of course to preach my “be positive only” plea. I remind the kids that the world has plenty of sadness and negativity- don’t bring more of that into the world via social media. I want my kids to use social media to send positive messages, connect with their interests and make the world brighter! This was a great little added connection I could make through this project.
Lastly, he talks about he “tries to be who he needed when he was younger.” As a teacher, this is everything. The kids that are hardest to love are the ones who need the love the most!
The Project Details:
I whipped up this worksheet really quickly and the kids added their imagery and cut them out in one period. UPDATE: here is the link worksheets/lesson for this project on my teachers pay teachers site!
